It's All About Appreciating The Small Things In Life

This year, I really decided to concentrate on being aware of my own happiness and doing more for me, as long as it doesn't affect other people of course. So I started this thread on my twitter where every day for the whole year I will write at least one good thing that has happened to me today. For me though when it comes to sitting down and writing that tweet almost every time I have actually written more than one thing which really goes to show that if you look hard enough you will find those small things. It's about learning to truly appreciate them and the more you do it I'm sure the easier it gets.

Let's be honest, it's hard to forget to see those small things or even to just take some time to stop, breathe and go and grab a coffee or a friend for a chat. In this day and age I feel it's all work work work, save for that house, save to go travelling so you can have stories to impress people with or even just mundane things like bills or a car and I think we forget that this isn't the be all. I know that I feel the pressure to be constantly working and earning money and although of course that is what I want to do, because I do want all of the things above, but people think that in order to be happy you need all those things. But happiness is not a destination. We're always thinking, but when I have this, or when this happens I'll be happy. But happiness is a condition, not a destination. We can really learn to get joy from the small things. Like every morning I get to back into bed with my choice of breakfast and spend half an hour just enjoying watching a video or scrolling through my phone or just enjoying my breakfast and that is all because I am lucky to live 10 minutes away from my work. That I am truly joyful for, especially when the mornings are so horrible with the dark and the sometimes rainy and very cold weather.

In the busy hectic lives we all seem to lead, I think we really do over look the nice things that can happen to us throughout our day. Part of the idea of the secret (more if which I'll talk about one day) is we can only receive more of what we want when we appreciate what we already have. That could be the items you already have, the people you choose to surround yourself with. It's important to remember to call or even go and see someone, a friend, a family member and see how they are or even making more time to spend with your other half. It could be giving items away that you no longer have use for, can you imagine that smile on a strangers face if they were able to have what you no longer need.
For example, I had a bag that I bought into work with supplies for an activity I was going to carry out. A friend noticed the bag and was saying how much they admired it and so I simply asked if they wanted it. I hadn't used in forever and I only used it this one time because it was the only bag that was able to fit all the supplies. They were honestly so appreciative and couldn't stop saying thank you and checking it was ok. Now it wasn't the fact I felt all high and mighty about doing a good deed, it was simply knowing that I'd made someone happy just with a simple gesture. It no longer bought me joy because I had plenty of other bags and so a little act of kindness went a long way. Another being that whenever me and Sam watch something together I stick my feet in his face and he tickles them (sorry for those who really don't like feet) Even though I know it's something he doesn't particularly enjoy he still does it and he will even let me swap feet so they both get their equal shares of tickles. That really is love!

I' dedicating my time to looking out for the small things now because they really can make all the difference to how you view your day, week, year, life as a whole (Woah Beth getting deep there)

Putting my dressing gown on as soon as getting home. Getting to wear my sunglasses in the winter on those rare sunny days. Anytime I get to spend with friends, especially if it involves food and drink. When my favourite crisps are on offer. Orgasms - all of them (ok, stole this of Chloe, as well as the inspiration for this post but girl knows) Getting that cup of tea just right. Feeling good in an outfit.  Feeling the sun on my skin. Sam - every part of him. Catching up with my family. When a child wants me to sit next to them at snack time. The way my skin looks in the morning after a good pamper the night before.

I could go on forever and ever on all the little things I appreciate and it's so nice to actually right because it makes you realise that actually life is pretty great to be honest and I don't need big things to happen to live a happy life.

  3. This was such a lovely read <3 I always feel so much pressure to achieve all of the big things you mentioned, and it can end up feeling like if you don't have those things, you can never be happy enough. But the thing is, my life is pretty darn good as it is! Sure I'm going to work towards those things, but there's so much happiness already in my life, and it's so important to remember to be grateful for that. Lovely post <3 xxx

  5. I also live 10 minutes from my work and it really is such a lucky little perk to have - when I lived further away it would take me over an hour to get into work and I'd arrive so angry from all the traffic and rushing. It really is the little things :) Lovely photos gal! xxx

  7. Love the t-shirt, I bought that album on vinyl from Camden Market :-)
It's totally important to appreciate all the awesome we have, one can get wound up in trying to meet goals and forget all the achievements already accomplished.
